Wayan the Healer in Ubud, Bali

So it goes like this.... I was at a spa in Ubud getting one of the ten dollar massages I love so much! I met these three Australian women who mentioned that they had visited, Wayan, the Traditional Balinese Healer, that is mentioned in the book 'Eat, Love, Pray'. It peaked my interest a little but really gave no other thought except to remember that she was in Ubud. I got back to my hotel only to discover that I was getting another stye on my eye that has seemed to plague me the last year. The last two I had to have 'cut-out' by a doctor, not pleasant. So that evening I thought well, I am just going to walk over to Wayan and see if she can do anything. What else do I have to do right?!

Her shop is covered in the front with medicinal plants that you have to walk through. I entered the store to find her and her two sons putting together either offerings or some concoction. They sat there quiet and I stood there, it really is odd because when you go into some shop's here, you are at times, in there house too....I felt as though I was intruding. She got up and said two word's to me, "Strong, Sex". Her boys started giggling and I turned around and looked over my shoulder, thinking she couldn't be talking to me, only to realize she was. So I replied, 'yeah, well, where is he?' We all got a big laugh, even her kids.... So we giggled, I told her my stye problem and then before I knew it they were running around whipping up concoctions and she was opening the front of my pants putting wet leaves on my lower belly and soaking leaves in hot water and sitting me down to rinse my eye with it. She gave me a medicinal drink to take and some other concoction....I just went with it...Oh, she insisted I had gas, I said of course I do, I am from the Combs family, but I haven't had any since coming to Bali and eating like the Balinese. She said yes you do, I said, no really I don't. She gave me another concoction and needless to say I farted the whole way home! Laughing of course, at the same time. Anyway.....my stye was just about completely gone when I awoke the next morning! So there's that......I hope to see her one more time before I leave. Hope you are all doing well!

Peace and Love from Bali!

Sanang Sally!

Oh my gosh! On my first read about your visit to Wayan, I laughed so much I nearly puddled my Platz (seat). In the second read through I couldn't avoid seeing more of our connections as this reminded me of some Pennsylvania Dutch faith, potion, and mud healers I used to visit as a child. There's something out there in nature for every human malady, I truly believe. These people are especially gifted and meant to offer the natural remedies when we're ready to ask for them. I'm so glad you had this positive and gleeful experience! Then I had to keep smiling while picturing the inevitable harmonizing that would erupt at a joint Combs-Frau family gathering. I'm serious, Sally, your entire story clicks with me ----- heart, soul, and funny bones. I also knew you'd be savoring those massages that come so highly recommended in the armchair-on-the-internet Bali traveling that I've been doing, the next best thing to being there. Now, have you had one of those fruit drinks with avocado, chocolate, sugar, and ice?! Tell me more! I'm loving it!

Thanks for the laughs and the light!

Hi Bal Sal!

Thanks for the compliments on my comments. Conveying fun and love comes naturally when I'm writing you. What goes around comes around, for sure. We're proof of that, no matter how many miles between.....I thank John for offering the Murni's website. What a Bali education I've been getting there and elsewhere about Balinese culture, customs, language, clothing, jewelry, and food! All of it feels quite right and natural. Next I intend to read that "Secrets of Bali" book.....Have you done any betel chewing?! Better to just look than to touch, right?.....Continue to feel at (second) home there, your 'OM sweet OM', and keep living every day in Tri Hita Karana!

Bali Shanti.....Shanti.....Shanti
